My handicap accessible God, part 1
It is exhausting sometimes to fight against anger and discouragement and self-pity, when I feel like there are obstacles in my way… when I feel very much handicapped because I’m unable to do things that I’ve dreamed about. I know I need to find comfort somewhere, and the Bible seems to be the best place to look. But what to look for? I start looking through verses, flipping to familiar passages and highlighted pages, and this is what I find:
“May your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” - Psalm 143:10
“The path of the righteous is level; O upright One, you make the way of the righteous smooth.” - Isaiah 26:7
And I start thinking, how cool is it that God is into accessibility! I mean, it says right here that he leads us on smooth, level paths! That means I can keep following him with nothing holding me back… no plan of his can be thwarted, because he builds ramps, widens lanes, and smoothes out the bumps. At this point I am already encouraged and excited, but I keep reading…
“I was pushed back and about to fall, but the Lord helped me. The Lord is my strength and my song; he had become my salvation.” - Psalm 118:13-14
“Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, ‘Be strong, do not fear; your God will come… Then will the lame leap like a deer…” - Isaiah 35:3-6
Now I’m REALLY excited, because He just took things a step further. Not only does he make things accessible, but he also plays the role of a personal aid - steadying me so I don’t fall, rescuing me, giving me strength and help. And then I read about how he is even like a personal trainer/physical therapist to David:
“It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You give me your shield of victory; you stoop down to make me great. You broaden the path beneath me, so that my ankles do not turn.” - 2 Samuel 22:33-37
There’s a lot of power and strength in these verses, and it all comes from the Lord.
